IT Privacy

Google Analytics - No Comments »

People are asking all the time about the term “Internet Privacy”. Many non-IT people think that privacy is simply a statement at the bottom of each and every website, or that is related to Facebook location, image and video sharing options. If you think so, live in Arab region, or just believe in privacy as complicated IT term, then please complete the blog post.

IT is simply about networking people and businesses together in different advanced ways that solved both managerial obstacles and operation challenges and changed our lifestyle.

However, there were side-effects. For example, website owners can simply detect the visitors; where they came from, time spent on the website, operations system, and more. When I firstly worked on Google Analytics, I got shocked by the amount of information available to me as account manager.

At NetSignature for digital / internet and web solutions, we are using Google-powered services including email; I seen how Google (theoretically at least) can know my contacts, calendar, shared documents, chat conversations, and even my search terms. If you Gmail and you were searching for dentist clinic in Cairo, then Google (again: theoretically at least) can know that you would apply for vacation before your spouse and manager know!

Then, once you reserve clinic schedule via online application, then the application administration will know that between 4PM and 6PM you will be in XYZ location. If the online application is operated by Google, then Google (some call it God Google) can easily know that at that time you will not be in your office or home since you will be in the dentist clinic. Wow!

The above-mentioned scenario is terrible and encourages each and everyone to understand the new technologies to minimize their side-effects. If Facebook activated ecommerce platform so we can click (buy) just as we click (like), then you can imagine how personal information can be linked to your E-Commerce activities. Basically, anyone sees your full name at Facebook can retrieve your home phone number easily.

Actually, the picture is not completely black or danger. Business companies and advertisers are able more than anytime to tailor their marketing messages to reach the most relevant segment or group or even individual. Also, security forces can track the criminals and get them arrested by analyzing their online activities and behavior.

We should treat our laptops, login information, Facebook and email accounts plus even smart phones as just private properties that should not be rented or borrowed. For more professional information related to privacy, visit privacy.org .

5 Website Success Measures for Businesses

CMS, Digital Marketing, Usability - No Comments »

I do remember the first time when I used the internet in 1999, it was translated as information network “شبكة المعلومات” and hence many local audiences considered websites as information channel. The concept of “information” was reflected on too much data at business websites that extended to irrelative personal data of business owners for example.

At NetSignature, the concept I realized was to consider the website as marketing tool for the business organization. Actually, website should be the responsibility of the marketing department rather than IT department.

If you are the marketing or sales manager, then you should keep eye on following online presence measures:

1. Sales/Supply Leads:
High quality website design should lead to qualified sales leads. Website quality isn’t measured by cost or even technology platform used, it is measured by usability. Is your website usable to your target audience?
If you work in B2B business, then your clients are senior managers and foreign suppliers, which should be reflected in English-speaking website with no need to flash intro. We use flash at our upcoming Hadanaty (My Nursery) e-Learning project, not at business websites that target international marketing managers. The internet industry has no readymade packages by the way!

Once your website is usable enough (in addition to few technical adjustments), then you can got found by your potential clients, suppliers, and even job applicants. Now, be ready for sales leads and more suppliers to reach your email inbox.

2. Customer Feedback:

Do you receive client complaints via your website? Which email address receives them, employee email (i.e. Tarek@abc.com) or generic email (i.e. feedback@abc.com)?
What about common questions, pricing terms or product offers? Are they clear enough to encourage potential stakeholders to go on for next step by communicating with you?

If you are representing an FMCG company, are you connected to your end users via social media? Are you utilizing customers email addresses to send them research-based surveys that would help you to enhance your operations and improve next quarter performance?

3. Content Update:

Do you advertise something on TV while your website content says something else?
It is important to have website technology or vendor that allows you to easily update your website data to match new product launch, or edit service terms and information.
Is your contact us page updated so clients can find your office easily?

4. Qualified Job Applicants:
Well, here you can do a favor for your colleagues at HR department. While website presence is essential marketing tool, it is also serving company long-term HR strategy. Once you have updated career page on reachable website, then potential job candidates can easily apply to your vacancies, so HR manager would get talent pool during the 365 days.

It is highly recommended to have online job system that allows the HR department to easily add jobs, de-activate filled ones, update job description, and review CVs anytime as well; all without sinking to mass crowd of CVs and papers.

5. Integration, Integration, Integration:
Do not invest to get excellent website without integrating with both offline world and social media. Your company URL should be added to entire company publications, agendas and print-outs. Also, encourage your employees to list your URL in signature of their personal emails.

Finally, websites actually are not just marketing tools; they are productive tools as well. Many online applications can help your employees to be more productive, and save wasted time while also get connected to more potential clients.
